Retreat Field Trips
Capileira and the high Sierra Nevada
All of the retreats cater for at least one Field Trip. You can choose from the following, but there is no need to decide until you arrive:
- Visit a local artists or writers/ photographers/musicians or sculptors studio, with picnic lunch or supper.
- Explore nearby pine and cork oak forests with stunning views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra Nevada mountains, including a walk on an ancient mule trail ending with tapas in a bar in the middle of nowhere!
- Visit the local Thursday market including drinks and tapas, or tea and Moroccan cakes at the Moroccan cafe in Orgiva, plus picnic lunch.
- A hike beside the river in a beautiful valley with a picnic and a swim in a friend's pool.
- Visit Capileira, a high mountain village in the Sierra Nevada range with craft shops, small art galleries, and a Moroccan tea shop. Short hike and picnic lunch.
- Visit Trevélez, Spain's highest village, craft shops, cafés, river walk, picnic, fiesta in June.
- An adventure to explore by car and on foot off the beaten tracks, valleys, villages, meeting local people, eating in a small local restaurant. Include a short walk and take an opportunity to practise your Spanish.
- Explore the almost deserted village of Bargis where pomegranates, figs, grapes and blackberries grow in wild profusion. A glance into how life used to be 50 years ago. Take a picnic lunch/supper.
- Have a real adventure exploring deep into the countryside by car and on foot with no planned destination. Enjoy the sense of adventure of not knowing what we will find or where our journey will take us, and experience a kaleidoscope of enchanting scenes of real Spanish country life:
- Explore back roads, old drovers tracks (the GR7) and abandoned villages
- Discover ancient threshing circles.
- Chance upon a small village market, a procession, a tiny village full of outdoor alters (Corpus Christi in June)
- Observe families of four generations harvesting olives or shelling almonds, goatherds walking the ancient hillsides
- Drink in fabulous mountain views
- Spot rare birds: Golden Orioles, hawks, eagles, vultures, nightingales
- Take tapas in a local bar somewhere, or a picnic lunch, and many surprises!
All Field Trips start at around 11am, returning around 5pm, or starting at 4pm returning about 10.30pm. There will not be a guided 'session' with Meg on the field trip day.
